79 Latham’s Snipe

Meet a bird with secretive habits and a surprising journey.

This episode is about the enigmatic Latham’s Snipe – a long-distance traveller that prefers wetlands to beaches. Birgita Hansen shares how she and other scientists are working to uncover its mysteries.

Birgita (she/her) is standing in a snowy landscape. She is wearing a cap, glasses and a scarf.

Birgita Hansen has a strong research interest in understanding the ecological response of birds to habitat change, including migratory shorebirds, riparian restoration in agricultural landscapes, and waterbird monitoring at local and continental scales. She is a long-time member of the volunteer-run Victorian Wader Study Group and serves on the executive committee of the Australasian Wader Studies Group. Birgita currently leads the national citizen science research program called The Latham’s Snipe Project.
