Life List
A ‘life list’ is a record of every bird species you’ve seen whilst birdwatching during your lifetime. Here are some ways for you to build your list.
What is a life list?
A ‘lifer’ is a bird species you’ve seen for the first time in your life. A ‘life list’ is your personal record of those birds - a way to track your progress and celebrate each new discovery.
Using a notebook
Prefer pen and paper? A notebook is a great way to stay connected to your birdwatching experiences. Pick something easy to carry - a pocket-sized journal or small sketchbook works well.
For each new bird, write down the species name, date, time and location. You might also like to record what it was doing or how you felt when you saw it. You could sort your records by bird family, date, location or whatever feels right for you.
Some people then enter their list into a spreadsheet for easy searching sorting.
Using an app
Digital life lists are becoming more popular, especially with free apps that sync and back up your sightings. Here are three apps that you could use:
Citizen science - Birdata
Citizen science - Merlin Bird ID + eBird
Field guide - PK Birds
Open the app when you spot a new bird and enter the species, date, location and any notes. Weekend Birder guides have more information about how to use apps.
